The Witness Tree Project

A September exhibition at Lefferts historic house is a collaborative project with the Rhode Island School of Design and Prospect Park Alliance, called ‘The Witness Tree Project’. The National Park’s Service defines ‘Witness Trees’ as long standing trees that have ‘witnessed’ key events in history. For this project a fallen 150- year old elm tree was cut and dried and the harvested wood was given to the RISD students to create objects. The students had previously traveled to Lefferts historic house and the park, to learn about immigration, race and diversity and the significance of Prospect Park in American history. The creativity of the students is on full view with objects as diverse as a teapot to an altar, a bust to a board game, a record player to a water yoke. The objects have been installed in the period room at Lefferts house and are on view from September 9 to 30th 2017.

We made the list of the top interior design exhibits to see in NYC.
